Bwindi Orphans Development Center is situated in Bahoma, in the Kanunga district, Uganda, at the entrance to the Impenetrable Rainforest - one of a handful of places where mountain gorillas survive in their natural habitat.

Many children in the local community have lost their parents due to HIV/AIDS and other reasons. We aim to ensure that the orphans and vulnerable children around the community are cared for and provided with education and life skills as well as sustenance and shelter.  This includes training in practical skills such as handcrafts, agriculture and traditional dance, which can provide sources of income for the present and provide skills to enable the children to grow into resourceful and self-sufficient members of the community.

You can see more about our work on our Current Activities page.

We have many ideas for educational and income-generating projects that would improve the prospects and future of
both the orphans and the wider community. You can see more about our ideas and progress on our Planned Projects page.

The nearby Bwindi Impenetrable Rainforest National Park provides an opportunity for local people to provide goods and services for visitors who come to see our rare wildlife such as mountain gorillas. We hope to construct a tourist lodge to generate funds for the orphanage and provide training and employment. This will require funding to start the project, please see our page ‘How you can help’.

We have friends around the world who have visited the orphanage and want to help us to achieve our vision. The magazine ‘New Scientist’ has published a letter from our UK friends, who helped to set up this website and can be contacted via our ‘Contact Us’ page.
