This website was built by 'Friends of Bwindi' (previously 'Friends of Bwindi Orphanage'), a UK-based charitable
organisation, to support
the work of 'Bwindi Orphans Development Center' (BODEC). Unfortunately our organisation is no longer able to support BODEC
and therefore
the website has been removed.
We will continue to support local groups and individuals.

Buhoma is the village next to Bwindi Impenetrable Rainforest. It is in the Kanunuga district.
The village is surrounded by stunning countryside and is adjacent to the rainforest.
The majority of villagers are Bakiga or Bafumbira.
Bakiga means people of the mountains. They speak a Bantu language
A tribe of Batwa pygmies also live in Buhoma.
Many of the local people speak English, they are very welcoming, friendly and respectful.

Gorillas and wildlife often come down from the rainforest and nest in land bordering villagers homes.
Villagers live in houses made of mud and wood. Many villagers are currently using clay from the land under their houses to make bricks and are rebuilding their homes.
